With this release, Gebb hires formidable horns players, including alto sax great Bobby Watson, tenor saxophonists Joel Frahm, Rob Blake and several performers alternating on a per track basis. Gebb shines as a sensitive accompanist amid his crisp and vibrant attack, shaded with cunning dynamics. And the musicians’ buoyant phrasings translate into a happening string of events, where various genres are fused into the jazz realm.
Overall, Gebb assists with injecting a fluid tone throughout the program. On “My Love,” the artists render a Latin-hued ballad via the warm horns choruses. With “Spitball,” Gebb notes the Billy Strayhorn influenced voicings within the liners, but the jazz-boogie metrics draw some similarities to trumpet legend, Lee Morgan’s classic, “Sidewinder.” Gebb mixes it up nicely while morphing calypso and various formats, highlighted by fierce breakouts and snappy themes, largely engineered with memorable melodies.
Frahm, Watson, saxophonist Ron Blake, trumpeter Joe Magnarelli and other soloists, inject their signature sounds into the broad spectrum. And the divergent track mix is consummated by Gebb’s crafty jazz-pop arrangement of The Beatles’ “Tomorrow Never Knows, where guest artist and sitarist Neel Murgai renders a classic indo-rock, psychedelic vibe.
Gebb’s refreshing approach to the jazz vernacular is commendable. This engagement should enjoy widespread appeal to traditionalists and progressive-jazz aficionados. Where many others seemingly go through the motions or run on autopilot, Gebb’s all-encompassing game-plan strikes a resonant chord.

They featured songs from his new CD release ‘Free At Last’ , discussed his life growing up in New York City and plugged the CD release party at Smalls Jazz Club in N.Y.C. All in all, they played 5 songs from ‘Free At Last’ with interview time in between songs. The banter between Gary Walker and Tobias Gebb reveals more about the artist than one would find on a website or in an article. The music features some of the hottest players in the NYC jazz scene like Joe Magnarelli, Joel Frahm, Ugonna Okegwo, Stacy Dillard, Mark Gross and special guest Bobby Watson.

You know how it feels when you’re working at your desk while listening to music and suddenly your head is nodding, shoulders are swaying and hips are flexing? Well, maybe you don’t…and that is indeed a shame. Before the rest of your muscles lock up, some music therapy is in order, and this disc provides it. On their first mainstream recording, drummer Tobias Gebb, bassist Neal Miner and pianist Eldad Zvulun have created close to a perfect set. Storymixes standards like “How Deep is the Ocean” with original compositions, and includes guest artists Joel Frahm on tenor sax and Champian Fulton on vocals. Storyleads off with “Poinciana” which, for the first few bars, mimics the 1958 Ahmad Jamal at the Pershingclassic until Gebb puts it through a series of very smooth time changes. The first original of the set, Gebb’s “Brasil Bela,” is a dashing, tightly arranged bossa nova. “Cute” shows off Gebb’s impeccable timing and soft brushes. Billy Strayhorn’s “Star-Crossed Lovers” is a beautiful romantic ballad and Zvulun’s piano strokes every note lovingly, while Gebb backs up softly with perfect synchronization. Gebb’s own “Two by Two,” my favorite, is in a distinctly “Manhattan-at- 3a.m.” noir vibe — sultry and very s-l-o-w with Miner taking the initial lead. Frahm’s lush tenor sax takes riffs with ease on “Autumn Serenade,” made immortal by John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman (on the eponymous CD, 1963, now remastered), and Fulton’s vocals wind through and around the melody beautifully. Pull up a martini and listen to this one.
